Description |
A born in 1878, native of West Virginia, Blanche Lazzell was strongly influenced by the art of Cubist artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso during her visit to Paris in 1912. In her art, Lazzell incorporated flat shapes and repeated geometric patterns to convey a sense of depth. She believed that Cubism expressed volume and strength through geometric forms. After World War I, Lazzell settled in Provincetown, Massachussetts where she developed a process of woodblock printing which gained popularity and became known as the Provincetown Print. This particular drawing reveals her artistic process in developing her prints. It is a study she used for her woodblock print, "Backyards". |
