Description |
The abstract drawings and mixed media collages of Henry "Hank" Keeling are the product of his belief that art reflects personal, spiritual, and emotional awareness. He interprets memories of events and places through line, shape, color and form. Keeling's abstract compositions communicate emotions rather that physical characteristics. Keeling received his bachelor of fine arts degree in 1944 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and his master of fine arts in 1986 from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. IN the 1950s he studied with Hans Hofmann at the Hans Hofmann School of FIne Art in New York. Hofmann's influence is evident in Keeling's approach to the structure of space, texture, lines and forms in a composition. He arranges these elements to create a sense of movement. From 1972 to 1987 Keeling was chairman of the art department at Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston) in Charleston, West Virginia. Keeling encouraged and significantly contributed to the artistic growth of many artists in the region through his teaching, his art, and his philosophy. |
