Description |
Grace Martin Taylor's powerful abstract still life paintings combine the aesthetics of Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. A native of West Virginia and graduate of West Virginia University, Taylor studied at the Art Students League in New York, the Emil Bisttram School of Painting in Taos, New Mexico and at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in Provincetown. Taylor painted "Red Still Life" during the time she was studying with Hofmann, her mentor. Although she preferred to paint with oil colors, Taylor also worked with watercolor, pastel, color woodcut and wash drawings. While in Provincetown studying with her distant cousin and fellow West Virginian, Blanche Lazzell, Taylor became adept at the woodblock printmaking technique known as the Provincetown Print . Upon returning to West Virginia, Taylor introduced modernist techniques and the innovative use of various art media to West Virginia artists interested in the leading art movements that were prevalent at the time. |
