Description |
Born in Crownpoint, New Mexico, Emmi Whitehorse (b.1957) avoids political subjects in her work. Instead she focuses on self identity through natural, landscape elements in accordance with Navajo philosophy. Her art expresses the harmony and beauty she feels at a particular location. Fluctuating light, shifting colors and her sensory impression of a place form the basis of her contemplative artworks. The colors she uses represent those she sees in her environment - mostly warm yellow, red and brown tones. Whitehorse earned her bachelor and master degrees from the University of New Mexico. HEr work has been featured in many solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. Her work is in numerous collections including Denver Art Museum, New Mexico Museum of Art, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and the Whitney Museum of American Art. |
