Description |
"A painting should kind of jump off the wall at people . . . make them stop and think a little bit." Charles Jupiter Hamilton's captivating sculptures, wall reliefs, and prints are memorable and thought provoking. His art conveys messages about life situations and personal battles with a touch of humor and satire. His skillful use of line, shape, and color expresses a sense of abundant energy. "As you continue to focus on my work, my color theory is attacking your nervous system and making your eyes jump and jiggle around." Born in Princeton, New Jersey, Hamilton moved with his family to a small farm in Troutman, North Carolina in 1952. He preferred drawing and painting to farm chores. In 1966 he joined the US Navy. After serving his tour of duty, he pursued his interest in art at the University of North Carolina. Hamilton made his permanent home in West Virginia where he established his art career and has influenced many young artists since 1977. His work has been exhibited regionally and in Boston, New York City, Miami, Tampa, San Diego, Baltimore, and Chicago. He has led numerous workshops for children and adults where he emphasizes imagination and ingenuity while encouraging the natural impulse to create. |
