Description |
In the 1960s and 1970s, the Pop Art images of Andy Warhol's soup cans and Roy Lichtenstein's comic strips were celebrated by the art world. At the same time, innovative artists outside the New York art circle were exploring the color field painting of Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko. One group of artists, the Washington Color School, explored pure color as a way to communicate emotion. Paul Reed was among the artists in the Washington Color School, along with Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, and Thomas Downing. These artists developed staining techniques with vivid, adjoining colors. Reed's "Safid V" is a shaped painting that was produced with a staining technique on un-primed canvas. "Safid V" presents the illusion of depth on a flat surface. Angled forms point toward a brilliant pink "+" at the center which jumps out at the viewer. Paul Reed (b.1919- d.2015) |
