Description |
A native of West Virginia, Paula Clendenin grew up in Cedar Grove, WV. She attended West Virginia University, receiving a BA in Painting, and then four years later received an MFA in Printmaking from the Creative Arts Center, Morgantown, WV. She left West Virginia and moved to Houston, where she discovered the Rothko Chapel and found immense inspiration. In 1989 upon returning to West Virginia she began to explore the landscape around her and allowed it to inspire and become a part of her as she had not done before. Much of her work after that time featured outlines of mountains and ghostly, anthropomorphic figures which blur the distinction between self and landscape. Her work is also interested in the interpretation of crosses that populate the West Virginian landscape around her and how that symbol transforms throughout her work. |
