Description |
Ben Freedman influenced many students and colleagues during the 20 years he taught art at West Virginia University. A native of New Orleans, Freedman earned degrees from Louisiana State University and Washington University and studied in Germany for one year on a Fulbright Scholarship. Freedman has studied with several prominent artists including Ralston Crawford and Carl Holty. Freedman's dynamic compositions are infused with humor and contain complex arrangements of lines and shapes. Commenting about his work, Freedman said, "I want the work to dazzle, involve, and absorb the viewer . . . the same way children are enchanted by toys." Cats and rabbits appear in many of Freedman's compositions, along with the occasional chicken. In "Cat in the Chicken House" the chaotic noise and activity of the scene is communicated through lines and shapes that describe flying feathers, paw prints, chickens on nests, and chickens scratching for corn in the yard while a curious cat sneaks into a chicken house. |
