Description |
Nancy Graves (b.1939-d. 1995) studied painting at the Yale School of Art and Architecture with notable artists Jack Tworkov, Alex Katz, and Al Held. She was the first woman to have a solo exhibition of her work at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She came to the attention of the public in the 1960s with her series of realistic life-size, soft-sculpted camels. Her work was inspired by her interest in the sciences including zoology, paleontology, and anthropology. As the daughter of a museum director, she grew up around art, history and science exhibits. In the 1980s her exploration of materials and art processes led her to produce works with brightly colored arrangments of found objects. Her paintings and prints incorporate colorful plant forms, mechanical parts and architectural elements. The natural and manmade forms "Anifoglie" reflect her keen interest in the sciences. |
