Description |
A former advertising artist and cartoonist, Wayne Thiebaud occupies a cherished place in the development of American art. He began to depict common objects from middle class America in the mid-1950s, long before such objects were associated with Pop Art. By the 1960s, Thiebaud's art elevated the humble aspects of American culture -- cafeteria food such as cakes, pies, hamburgers and hot dogs -- into timeless metaphors for our desires. He began to explore bizarre perspectives of San Francisco's plunging streets and rising structures in his 1978 solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. "Steep Street" is an example of his dramatic and unorthodox cityscape compositions. Buildings soar skyward while teetering on exaggerated bluffs. Streets have the appearance of huge playground slides where there is no place for a pedestrian to stand. Thiebaud's mastery of multiple printing techniques and use of atmospheric color is evident in "Steep Street". |
