The Juliet Art Museum's collecting efforts began in 1963 when it was known as the Charleston Art Gallery at Sunrise, a historic mansion turned multi-use museum. In the beginning, the museum did not limit its acquisitions to any style, movement, medium, or artist nationality, which has given the collection a unique and wide-reaching significance. With the combined efforts of its affinity group, public and private contributions, and foundational support, the museum aimed to narrow the focus of the collection and began seeking out 19th and 20th century American art with an emphasis on work on paper, which has, in turn, become the strength of the museum's collection. Now at home in the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences, the collection boasts over 1,000 objects and focuses on West Virginian and Appalachian artists across media including painting, drawing, printmaking and photography.
